4 Ways To Treat A Toothache
If you have ever suffered a toothache, you know how excruciating dental pain can be. Although a severe toothache can be considered a dental emergency, there still may be a day or so before your dentist is able to see you. This is especially common if your toothache has started after business hours. Although some dentists may prescribe an antibiotic over the phone to start treating the infection of the tooth, the antibiotic may require a couple of days to alleviate or lessen your discomfort. Here are a few ways that you can lessen your tooth pain until you make it to the dental office:
Saltwater Rinses
Salt is antibacterial, and it helps reduce the swelling of inflamed tissues. Thus, it can be helpful in relieving the pain of your toothache. To use a saltwater rinse, place a spoonful of table salt or sea salt in a cup of warm water. Swish the warm solution around your mouth as you would mouthwash until you start to feel the pain lessening. This can be done repeatedly as often as needed. However, it is best not to swallow the solution due to its sodium content. Instead, simply release it into the sink.
Salt and Pepper Paste
Another way to alleviate your tooth pain is to form a paste of salt and pepper. To make your paste, simply mix equal amounts of salt and pepper with enough water to form a pasty consistency. Apply the paste directly to the aching tooth. Some people experience almost immediate relief using this mixture.
Tea Bags
Tea displays anti-inflammatory properties. When you place a tea bag next to the affected tooth and bite down gently for a period, the tea starts to draw the infection from the gums around the tooth. You may notice that when you remove the tea bag, it is coated with a slimy substance.
As the infection is drawn out, it may place less pressure on dental nerves and lessen your tooth pain.
Oral Analgesics
Oral analgesic gel may be applied directly to the throbbing tooth. However, be sure to only use the gel as prescribed. Most include directions on the label that define how often the gel can be used and in what quantities.
If you have a terrible toothache, it is best to schedule an appointment with a family dentist as soon as possible. Even if you are able to alleviate the pain using home remedies, it is important to find the underlying cause of the toothache.
